EminDear Human Rights House Network members and partners,

Later today, the Swiss Radio Television will run a reportage stating that our friend and colleague, Emin Huseynov, leader of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) in Azerbaijan, has since August been hiding at the Swiss Embassy. The short film will also cover the unprecedented repression in Azerbaijan, which led to most of the key leaders of civil society to be imprisoned or to have gone to live and work from abroad.

Emin is indeed staying since 18 August at the Swiss Embassy in Baku, to gain protection.

The severe detention conditions in Azerbaijani prisons could have had irreversible consequences on his health, as well as for Intigam Aliyev and for Leyla Yunus and her husband Arif Yunus.

When contacted by the journalist of the Swiss Radio Television, we were informed that she had a source with this information. HRHF did not confirm until we could check that she was well informed and must indeed have a high-level source. To respect the agreement HRHF found with the journalist, we will be putting an article live on HRHN’s website at 21:00 CET tonight. In the meantime, here is the direct link for those of you who wish to prepare something to launch on your own media outlets: We will also tweet it and put links on Facebook. We already attach the article in Word for your own communication, but ask you to also respect the embargo at 21:00 tonight. We suggest to use #SupportEmin as hashtags.  We also attach a few pictures of Emin.

The reportage will be shown in German. The Swiss Public Television is also working with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) to run it with English subtitles. In any case, we will link to the video on HRHN’s website.

We know all of you understand that Emin needed this protection and that he is in no way a criminal or fugitive. By publishing information about him, we all show solidarity and set clear that the Azerbaijani authorities need to drop all charges against him and imprisoned human rights defenders, activists and journalists.

Please do not hesitate to be in touch with us for more information.

All the best,
