Group of Youth activists Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, Deyanet Babayev and Jabar Savalan have been recently arrested because of youth social and political activties  in Azerbaijan.Youth activists in Azerbaijan say they are coming under pressure over a Facebook campaign calling for a day of antigovernment protests on March 11.

The organizers of the campaign are calling March 11 the Great People’s Day and want people to click their approval of the protest as well as gather in different towns and cities across Azerbaijan.

Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, one of the organizers, was arrested on March 4 and ordered held in pretrial detention for a month for violating an order not to leave the city of Ganja while previous charges of evading military service were investigated.
Hajiyev, 29, a Harvard graduate and a former parliament candidate, denies those charges and has linked his arrest to his Facebook activity, about which he was questioned by police earlier on March 4.
Meanwhile, another youth activist was given 10 days administrative punishment on March 5. Police said Dayanat Babayev, a member of the opposition Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) youth wing, was detained in central Baku for resisting police, who had reprimanded him for speaking loudly on his mobile phone and “using abusive words.” Another youth activist Jabbar Salavan, member of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party Youth Committee In the evening of 5 February was arrested in Sumgayit. Jabbar Savalan is currently being held in Sumgayit Police Department. Abulfaz Gurbanli says that, after the confrontation that took place between the police and opposition during the 21st anniversary of 20 January events, Mr. Savalan said he was being followed. On 5 February, he was with us at the Youth Committee Conference. Later we watched a film at Norwegian Human Rights House, and he went home to Sumgayit. We heard early this morning that he has been arrested, as narcotics were planted in his pocket. He was very politically active; he was always together with us [the youth committee]. His arrest relating to possession of drugs is completely ridiculous. Jabbar Savalan was a new party member and was arrested due to his political activity. He is a student, in his fourth year studying History at Sumgayit State University.” Abulfaz Gurbanli considers that the drugs bring found in Jabbar Savalan’s pocket was something premeditated.  “This is directly related to ours and Jabbar Savalan’s political activity.”

Mathew Brayza USA ambassador in Azerbaijan has  stated on march 7, 2011 that they deeply  follow arrested  youth activist cases in Azerbaijan.
